The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
