Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Secure Initial Wins Following Recent Detentions
The Miami Heat recorded 86 first-half points against the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first basketball game since guard Terry Rozier was detained over suspected illegal sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained as part of a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
However, the Heat were focused as they put up 86 opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and later stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces the situation."
Portland also secured their initial match after the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also said an league probe into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.
"So, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
