Chicago White Sox Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative $34 Million Deal.
In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract for the accomplished player.
Contract Details and Added Benefits
The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16 million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the final year.
Additionally, Murakami's compensation may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for being named the league MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for finishing between fourth and tenth.
- $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.
The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his permission and makes him a free agent at the termination of the contract. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
Posting Fee and Historical Context
As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a posting fee of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a additional payment of 15% triggered incentive payments.
Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the South Siders, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, bolsters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a last-place season, finishing last in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.
Having earned league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was limited to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Despite recording 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third base.
International Pedigree
Murakami's heroics were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The very next day in the title match against the Team USA, he slugged a tying homer in the early innings, helping Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.
The new White Sox addition is set to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
