Celebratory Displays and a Toast for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Agreement to Return Hostages
The declaration of an agreement expected to result in the release of hostages held within Gaza for more than 24 months has caused joy and comfort across Israel.
An organization which has campaigned for the release of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “deep appreciation” for what it termed an “historic breakthrough”.
The deal—which still must be agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—involves the return of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 deceased captives in return for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 hostages have come back—largely through earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been recovered and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled ahead of the deal being signed.
The gathering began clapping and dancing beneath American and Israeli banners—a female attendee displaying a sign saying: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” the woman said.
A different person, 50-year-old Yael, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I am thrilled—it’s such a relief,” she said. “We need to see their return home to their loved ones.”

Families Celebrate with Fireworks
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker set off fireworks in celebration of the news that he would be homecoming.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The delight was palpable throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Toasts
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting “L’chaim”, meaning “to life”. She has advocated for the freedom of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their brother Liran Berman posted: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You’re coming home.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, with her remains found in an underground passage in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other hostage families in pushing for an agreement which ensures the homecoming of everyone still being held in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We have waited for such a long time and now it’s here,” he said.
He stated he was “broken” that his cousin will not be among those coming back to their homes but was “radiant with happiness” for the relatives of the captives who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south along with his brother.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she felt like she was living “in a dream”.
“We’re more than grateful to the President and all he has done for us. It seems like it might be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she commented.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
“Before the final captive is here, we’re not opening the champagne. We’re going to keep fighting... until the end,” she affirmed.
“So many things can happen up to the final instant so this is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who was involved in the work and make sure this deal is finalized... We shall rejoice only when we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south together with his sibling Iair, who was released from detainment through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
