No less than 64 civilians were killed in a security raid against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. Over 80 people were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods close to the city's international airport is seen as the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Government representatives said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community members have likened the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Rio's police stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the operation, together with numerous weapons.
