Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
